BRF Episode 20: “Pop”

There are few things more interesting than the evolutionary pace of the Darwin Finch on the Galapagos Islands. Or are there?

This episode takes Ragini and Shar as always on a journey of history, culture, art, evolutionary biology, onomatopoeia and weasels! We may have lost the thread a little there.

We started off sane enough with the evolution of pop culture; (hint: it goes back further than you think it does) and before we knew it Ragini had us talking about evolutionary biology - or more specifically a study of the evolution of pop culture in comparison to organic evolution. The results were interesting to say the least! From there we made the obvious transition to Shakespeare - we find that Shakespeare comes up in so many of our episodes and we found out why he’s in our thoughts so frequently thanks to Ragini’s exposition on his impact on pop culture!

Now if popping bubblewrap wasn’t amazing in and of itself, you’d be surprised at the findings of a study that went into this visceral, enjoyable experience and what it has to do with fight or flight!

And then…we discussed Art. The revolutionary school of artistic expression we discussed emerged in a post-war world and had us captivated! If we just said “Campbell’s Soup Can”, could you guess what it was?

And then…pop corn! Need we say more?

Lastly, we talked about a weird phenomenon amongst the “young people” (We feel like we just aged 30 years, purchased a lawn and told teenagers to get off it). This phenomenon had something to do with COVID-19 tests and soda. That’s all we’re going to say.
