BRF Episode 22: “Mummy”

We’ve got two confessions to make: 1) we’ve done this word before and 2) you’ll be glad we spared you that first version.

We started off with a gleeful narration of some interesting anecdotes of the Victorian obsession with Egyptology. We use the term “polite thievery”, which we might trademark later on. The obsession went all the way to disturbing cures fashioned from the poor old mummies! In a word, yuck. Not more yuck than having an “unwrapping party”, but less yuck than nicking yourself with a shaving razer and dying. Everything’s relative! Listen to find out more.

You’ll be surprised to hear the modern mummy we discussed. Hint: we travel to the land of vodka. Who could it be? Not only is the person they mummified interesting, but the method of mummification was also amazing!

We also discuss an interesting find called the Children of Llullailaco - which needs to be heard to be properly absorbed. There’s something to be said about knowing what a child’s last meal was in the 16th century. Fascinating. Also, restating something from the episode: NO OFFENCE TO BALD PEOPLE ANYWHERE.

So, self-mummification. Heard of it? Us neither! It’s as jarring as we thought it would be and infinitely more interesting than we could imagine! Wouldn’t advise you do it though. Especially if you’re a fan of good food.

Did you know mummies weren’t always evil? Well, until one famous writer unleashed his pen upon them. Learn how one story was almost singlehandedly responsible for making mummies evil and cursed.

Now, lastly, cursing mums - not acceptable? Glad you agree! But we thought it important to discuss why there’s a fixation with it.

And then the cherry on the top - The Sun’s journalistic capabilities - let’s dissect.
