BRF Episode 33: “Number”

The Fibonnaci Numbers, Pythagorean Cults, and a "Prime" Conspiracy

Welcome to the 10th episode of our second season!

After establishing and agreeing on what the exact date is, Ragini and Shar jump right into the episode – which is a nod to Fibonacci Day on November the 23rd! We’re sure you had elaborate plans; what did you do to celebrate? There’s a reason that the date is important to the Fibonacci sequence; listen to the episode to find out why!

Ragini talks quite passionately about the patterns of Fibonnaci numbers and their connection to the famous Golden Ratio. Her valiant explanations of the patterns must be applauded. They must! She also talks about the origins of the sequence and how it didn’t necessarily originate where you think it did!

Fun fact: While the second-most famous Leonardo (after diCaprio of course) in history is attributed with the discovery of this unique sequence, Ancient Sanskrit texts that used the Hindu-Arabic numeral system first mention the sequence in 200 B.C. !

Enter: Cults! Shar talks about the famous Pythagoras and how his part philosophical / part religious group created interesting ripples in history with its unique practices and beliefs. We also talk about Pythagoras’ special thigh - was it golden, was it not? We’ll never know but we know which version we like more.

Shar also talked about the interesting rules and best practices recommended by Pythagoras himself. Here’s one: he didn’t recommend sex in the summer. Understandable, really. More strangeness in the episode!

And finally, Ragini told us all about the Prime Conspiracy. Let’s just say that if you thought that prime numbers behave like random numbers, you’re wrong!

Who thought numbers could be so exciting!
